AEO vs SEO: What Actually Changes When AI Answers the Question

Answer engines did not replace search. They changed what a win looks like. Here is what stays the same, what is genuinely new, and how to split the effort.

Founders keep asking us the same question in different words: is it AEO vs SEO now, and do we have to pick one? The short answer is no. Answer engine optimization (AEO) is not a replacement for search engine optimization (SEO). It is the same discipline aimed at a new kind of result — a written answer from Google's AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity or Copilot, instead of a list of ten blue links.

What does change is how you measure success, how you write, and where your brand needs to be mentioned. This guide separates the parts that are genuinely new from the parts that are just SEO with a new label, so you can spend the budget where it counts.

AEO vs SEO: the plain definitions

SEO is the work of getting a page crawled, indexed and ranked for the searches your buyers make, then earning the click. It covers technical health, content, links and the page experience. The goal is a position in the results and a visit to your site.

AEO is the work of getting your content and your brand used inside an answer. The reader may never click. Success is being the source the answer cites, or the brand it names when someone asks for a recommendation. Some people call the same idea generative engine optimization (GEO) or LLM optimization; the labels overlap and the practical work is almost identical.

The overlap is large because most answer engines retrieve from the web before they write. Google describes AI Overviews and AI Mode using a "query fan-out" technique — issuing many related searches across subtopics and then pulling supporting pages. If your page is not findable by search, it is rarely findable by the answer.

What stays the same

Google is unusually direct about this. Its guidance on AI features states there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and that a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown with a snippet to be used as a supporting link. In other words, the SEO foundations are the entry ticket for Google's answer engine.

  • Crawlability and indexing. Clean site structure, working sitemaps, no accidental noindex tags, fast pages.
  • Helpful, original content. Pages that answer a real question better than the alternatives.
  • Authority. Links and mentions from sites people trust in your category.
  • Structured data that matches the page. Accurate schema helps machines understand what the page is about.

If these are weak, AEO work will not rescue you. Our SEO basics for founders covers the foundations we check before anything else.

What genuinely changes

Four things are different enough to plan for separately.

1. The click is no longer guaranteed

When an answer satisfies the question, fewer people visit a website. A Pew Research Center analysis of 900 US adults' browsing found that users who saw an AI summary clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits, against 15% for users who did not see one. Links inside the summary were clicked in just 1% of visits. That changes what a good outcome looks like for informational queries.

2. Writing has to be quotable

Answer engines lift passages, not pages. Content that puts the direct answer in the first sentence under a heading, defines terms plainly and keeps each claim self-contained is easier to quote accurately. Long wind-ups before the point make you harder to cite.

3. Brand mentions matter more than before

For recommendation-style questions ("best tool for X"), the answer names brands. Being mentioned by credible third parties — reviews, industry lists, forums, podcasts — shapes whether you are one of them. Links still count, but unlinked mentions start to matter too.

4. The crawlers are different

Each assistant has its own bots. OpenAI, for example, documents that sites opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, separately from GPTBot, which is used for model training. A robots.txt written years ago may be blocking answer engines you now want to appear in.

How to measure each one

SEO measurement is mature: rankings, impressions, clicks and conversions. Google notes that sites appearing in its AI features are included in the overall search traffic in Search Console, inside the Performance report — so your existing SEO reporting already includes some AEO results, just not labeled separately.

For AEO outside Google, measurement is still rough. What we track in practice:

  1. AI-referred sessions in analytics — visits whose referrer is chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, copilot or similar.
  2. Answer probes — asking assistants your buyers' category questions on a schedule and recording whether your brand is named, and who is named instead.
  3. Citation checks — whether your pages appear as sources for your key topics in AI Overviews.
  4. Branded search volume — people who hear your name in an answer often search for it afterward.

How to split effort between AEO and SEO

The honest answer to the AEO vs SEO budget question depends on what kind of queries sell your product.

  • Transactional and local queries ("hire X near me", "X pricing") still send clicks. Keep SEO as the main effort.
  • Informational queries ("what is X", "how does X work") are where AI summaries appear most and clicks fall. Write for citation and brand recall, not only traffic.
  • Recommendation queries ("best X for Y") are decided by who gets named. Invest in third-party mentions and comparison content.

In practice most of the work is shared, whichever side of AEO vs SEO you start from. A well-structured, answer-first article with accurate schema serves both. The AEO-specific additions are small: check assistant crawler access, tighten how answers are phrased, and build a plan for mentions on other sites.

A practical AEO and SEO checklist

  1. Fix indexing and technical issues first — nothing else works without it.
  2. Review robots.txt for assistant crawlers you want to allow, such as OAI-SearchBot.
  3. Put a one or two sentence direct answer under each question-style heading.
  4. Add FAQ sections that use the questions buyers really ask, with schema that matches the visible text.
  5. Use one consistent name for your brand, products and key concepts across the site.
  6. Earn mentions on credible third-party sites in your category, not just links.
  7. Track AI referrals and run monthly answer probes alongside your SEO reports.

Common mistakes in the AEO vs SEO debate

Most wasted budget we see comes from treating AEO vs SEO as a choice between two separate teams, tools and reports. A few patterns come up again and again:

  • Pausing SEO to "do AEO". The answer engines still depend on pages that search engines can crawl and trust. Cutting the foundations cuts both channels.
  • Buying an "AI visibility" tool before fixing access. If robots.txt or a CDN rule blocks assistant crawlers, no dashboard will change the result.
  • Rewriting every page as a list of questions. Answer-first structure helps, but pages still need depth, examples and a point of view to be worth citing.
  • Chasing mentions on low-quality sites. Paid listicles and fake reviews are easy to spot and can damage the brand you are trying to get named.
  • Judging results from one screenshot. AI answers vary by wording and session. Track a fixed set of questions over months, not a single reply.

The practical way to settle the AEO vs SEO question is to stop treating it as a contest. Run one content and technical program, and report on both scoreboards.

Where to start

Start with an audit that looks at both scoreboards: where you rank, where you are cited, and where competitors are named instead of you. That tells you whether the gap is technical, content or reputation — three very different fixes.

That is how our SEO and AEO practice begins every engagement, and answer-first articles are produced by our content writing team with real search data behind every topic. Frequently asked questions

Will AEO replace SEO?

No. Answer engines retrieve from the web, and Google says pages need to be indexed and snippet-eligible to appear in its AI features, so SEO remains the foundation. AEO adds answer-first writing, crawler access for AI bots and brand mentions on top of it.

Is Google Ads considered SEO?

No. Google Ads is paid search; SEO is about earning unpaid, organic visibility. Google states that investment in paid search has no impact on your organic search ranking, so the two are separate channels that can support each other but do not overlap in ranking.

What are the four main types of SEO?

They are usually grouped as on-page SEO (content and HTML of each page), off-page SEO (links and mentions from other sites), technical SEO (crawling, indexing, speed and site structure) and local SEO (visibility for location-based searches). AEO draws on all four.

Is SEO dead now with AI?

No, but it has changed. AI summaries reduce clicks on informational searches, as Pew Research's data shows, yet those summaries are built from pages that search engines can find and trust. Businesses that keep strong SEO foundations and add AEO practices stay visible in both places.

How long does AEO take to show results?

Technical changes such as unblocking an assistant's crawler can take effect within days; OpenAI notes robots.txt changes take about 24 hours to register for search. Being cited or named for competitive questions takes longer, because it depends on content quality and third-party mentions built over months.
