How to Rank in ChatGPT: What Works, What Doesn't, and How to Measure It

There is no ranking dial inside ChatGPT. There are a handful of things that make your pages findable and your brand worth naming — and a way to check.

"How to rank in ChatGPT" is a slightly misleading question, and it helps to say why up front. ChatGPT does not have a results page with positions one to ten. When it searches the web, it reads sources and writes an answer, sometimes citing pages and sometimes naming brands. Ranking in ChatGPT really means two things: your pages get used as sources, and your brand gets named when someone asks for a recommendation.

Both are achievable, and neither involves tricks. This guide covers what OpenAI actually documents, what the available data suggests, and the practical steps we take for clients — plus how to tell whether any of it is working.

How ChatGPT chooses what to show

ChatGPT answers from two places. The first is what the model learned in training, which is fixed until the next model. The second is live web search, which it uses for current, specific or comparison questions. The second is where most businesses can make a difference quickly, because it depends on pages that exist and can be fetched today.

OpenAI runs separate crawlers for these jobs. According to its crawler documentation, OAI-SearchBot surfaces websites in ChatGPT's search features, GPTBot collects content that may be used to train models, and ChatGPT-User fetches pages when a user's request needs them. You can allow one and block another. That matters: blocking GPTBot for training reasons does not have to remove you from search answers.

Step 1: Make sure ChatGPT can reach your site

This is the most common problem we find, and the cheapest to fix. OpenAI states plainly that sites opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, and recommends allowing it in robots.txt and allowing requests from its published IP ranges. Many sites block it by accident — through an old blanket rule, a security plugin, or a CDN bot filter.

  1. Open your robots.txt and check for rules that disallow OAI-SearchBot or all bots.
  2. Check your firewall or CDN bot settings for AI crawler blocking that overrides robots.txt.
  3. Make sure key content is in the HTML, not only rendered after heavy client-side JavaScript.
  4. Allow about a day for changes to register; OpenAI notes it can take around 24 hours after a robots.txt update.

Step 2: Write pages an AI can quote

When ChatGPT uses a source, it lifts a specific passage. Pages built for that are easier to cite accurately. The same habits help classic search, which is why we treat this as one practice — our guide to AEO vs SEO explains where the two overlap and where they differ.

  • Answer first. Put the direct answer in the first one or two sentences under each heading, then add detail.
  • Use question-style headings that match how buyers phrase things in a chat.
  • Keep facts self-contained. A sentence should still make sense if it is quoted alone.
  • Define your terms and your brand. Say plainly what you do, for whom and where.
  • Cite primary sources for numbers, so your page is a trustworthy place to borrow them from.
  • Keep pages current. Stale prices, dates and product names get your page skipped or, worse, quoted wrongly.

Good writing is most of this. If your team does not have the capacity, it is worth budgeting for properly — our breakdown of copywriting rates explains what drives the price of expert content.

Step 3: Get mentioned where ChatGPT looks

For recommendation questions — "which agency should I use for X" — the answer usually names several brands. Being among them depends partly on what other sites say about you: reviews, industry roundups, directories, forums and interviews.

The data here is more nuanced than much of the advice online. In an Ahrefs study of 75,000 brands, branded web mentions had a 0.664 correlation with visibility in Google's AI Overviews, far higher than the number of backlinks at 0.218. But a follow-up Ahrefs comparison across AI assistants, covering 957,000 ChatGPT prompts in June 2025, found the same correlation was only 0.15 for ChatGPT, against 0.65 for AI Overviews. Mentions help, but they are not the whole story for ChatGPT.

How to rank in ChatGPT: what to prioritize

If you have limited time, this is the order we work in. The early items are cheap and certain; the later ones take longer but compound.

Which pages to work on first

You do not need to rewrite the whole site. When clients ask us how to rank in ChatGPT on a small budget, we start with the pages an assistant is most likely to need when a buyer asks about your category:

  1. The About page. It is where a model confirms who you are, what you sell, where you operate and who you serve. Vague About pages lead to vague or missing mentions.
  2. Service or product pages. Each should say in its first lines what the offer is, who it is for and what makes it different.
  3. Comparison and "how to choose" content. Recommendation questions pull from pages that explain options fairly, including trade-offs.
  4. Pricing or cost explainers. Even if you do not publish prices, a page that explains how cost is scoped answers a question buyers ask constantly.
  5. Your strongest guides. The articles that already rank or earn links are the ones most likely to be retrieved again.

Keep one name for each thing across all of these pages — one brand name, one product name, one term for your core service. Inconsistent naming makes it harder for any system to connect the pages to the same company.

What does not work

  • Hidden text or prompt-style instructions aimed at AI crawlers. They are a trust risk and can backfire if the text is quoted.
  • Mass-produced thin pages targeting every variation of a question. They dilute the pages that deserve to be cited.
  • Buying fake reviews or listicle placements. Low-quality mentions are easy to spot and can damage the brand you are trying to build.
  • Treating a single ChatGPT answer as proof. Answers vary by wording, location and session, so one screenshot means little.

How to measure progress

A rank tracker cannot tell you how to rank in ChatGPT, because there is no rank to track. Measure the outcomes instead.

  1. Build a prompt set. Write 20 to 40 questions your buyers would actually ask, from "what is" to "who should I hire for".
  2. Run it on a schedule, monthly is enough, and record whether your brand is named or your pages are cited, and who appears instead.
  3. Track AI-referred sessions in your analytics by filtering for referrers such as chatgpt.com.
  4. Watch branded search. People who hear your name in an answer often search for it next.

Run the probes from a clean session with no memory or custom instructions, so the answers reflect what a new user would see.

Where to start

The fastest answer to how to rank in ChatGPT is to start with the cheap checks: crawler access, your About page and the five pages that matter most for sales. Then build the prompt set, so you have a baseline before you change anything else.

This is the same process our SEO and AEO team runs for clients, combining crawler audits, answer-first content and regular AI answer probes. If you want to know how your brand shows up in ChatGPT today, tell us what you sell and who buys it and a senior strategist will reply within one business day.

Frequently asked questions

How to rank on AI results?

Make your pages accessible to AI crawlers, write them answer-first with clear headings and sourced facts, and build credible mentions of your brand on other sites. For Google's AI features, standard SEO still applies: pages must be indexed and eligible for a snippet.

How to get mentioned in ChatGPT?

Make it easy for ChatGPT to find and understand you: allow OAI-SearchBot, state clearly what you do and for whom, and earn reviews, roundups and interviews on credible third-party sites. There is no paid or submitted placement for organic mentions.

How to do SEO for ChatGPT?

Start with ordinary SEO foundations, then add AI-specific steps: check robots.txt and CDN rules for OpenAI's crawlers, restructure key pages so each section opens with a direct answer, and use FAQ content that matches how people phrase questions in chat.

Does blocking GPTBot remove my site from ChatGPT search?

Not by itself. OpenAI documents GPTBot as the crawler for model training and OAI-SearchBot as the one for search features, and the two can be set independently in robots.txt. Blocking OAI-SearchBot is what keeps a site out of ChatGPT search answers.

How long does it take to show up in ChatGPT answers?

Crawler access changes register in about a day, according to OpenAI. Being cited or recommended for competitive questions takes longer, usually months, because it depends on content quality and on what other sites say about your brand.
